My revered teachers

Dr Santosh Kumar(SK) Mukherjee, MRCP, a very renowned physician of Indore was my teacher in medical college. He was considered a ‘God’ of medicine by all in and around Indore city. Any patient and his/her relatives were not satisfied unless Dr Mukherjee has seen the patient once. His was the last word in medicine during his tenure during 1930- 1990. He was very soft spoken, kind hearted, brilliant physician. Full of empathy and love for his patients, never bothered about the money. A true ‘Dhanvantari’.

I feel honoured to be his favoured student, he was an excellent teacher, always emphasized the importance of understanding all the details about the patient in order to come to diagnosis.

Dr BB Ohri, FRCS, was 100% Surgeon, a great personality, handsome, authoritative, a perfect Surgeon. He believed in perfection, and followed it to the end. During my training period with him, he was a hard task master, but I was his favourite student/assistant. And I benefited a lot.

I suffered an acute appendicitis in 1946-47, and the appendix burst in my abdomen. I was brought to Indore in emergency to be under his care. He operated on me. Penicillin has just been available in India, even IV saline or glucose bottles were not freely available. 4-6 Bottles were sterilised and saline was made every day under his supervision. He himself used to visit me 3 times a day to see my progress. I had a complete recovery because of his efforts and loving care. He was my GOD, and I owe my life to him… I am grateful for his affection. Dr BB Ohri visited me in Chatarpur, Gandhinagar… where I worked as surgeon. He gave his opinion on several challenging patients during his visit to these remote places.

I bow down to these stalwarts of doctors, and If I manage to be even 1/4th of his capacity as a surgeon… I’ll be humbly honoured…
